BASIC KASHMIRI CONVERSATIONS

This Script is now being used, or set to be used by all for uniformity in writing Kashmiri in Devanagari. The Standardised Devanagari-Kashmiri Alphabet has the following set of Vowels and Consonants.

Here’s a guide to the pronunciation of some of the basic sounds in Kashmiri:

  • Vowels:
    • a: similar to the “a” in “father”
    • e: similar to the “e” in “bet”
    • i: similar to the “i” in “bit”
    • o: similar to the “o” in “note”
    • u: similar to the “u” in “put”
  • Consonants:
    • b, p: pronounced as in English
    • t, d: pronounced with the tip of the tongue touching the upper teeth
    • k, g: pronounced at the back of the mouth
    • ch, j: pronounced as in “church” and “judge”, respectively
    • h: pronounced as a voiceless breath
    • kh, gh: pronounced as a rough, aspirated “k” and “g”
    • r: rolled “r” sound
    • s, sh: pronounced as in English
    • z, zh: pronounced as “z” and “j” with a buzzing sound, respectively
    • f: pronounced as in English, but with the lower lip touching the upper teeth
    • q: pronounced as a “k” sound, but further back in the throat
    • y: pronounced as in “yes”
    • w: pronounced as in “we”
    • n: pronounced as in English, but with the tip of the tongue touching the roof of the mouth

It’s important to note that the pronunciation of Kashmiri can vary depending on the region and the speaker.
